BRC welcomes the President of Trinidad and Tobago

We were honoured to welcome His Excellency Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona ORTT, SC President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to Brent River College on 7th December 2017.

His Excellency visited the students in their classrooms and talked to all of them. He was very interested in their aims and ambitions.

He spoke to the whole school about his time as a lawyer and a judge and his commitment to education as an investment in our childrens’ futures.

He presented everyone with a Presidential wristband with the motto for his oath and everyone stood and recited the oath after the President.

“Do the Right thing : It is the Right Thing to Do”.

He also presented the school with a book called The Carnival Suite a book about the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival.

We are very grateful to Andrew and Michael Mohammed of The Investigators, who work with our students and provide motivational workshops, for arranging the visit.

His Excellency’s visit totally reinforced our values and was both inspirational and uplifting.

Opening of BRC Primary Short Stay Unit

We are pleased to announce the opening of our Primary Short Stay Unit based, at our Stag Lane site, in Kingsbury.

A lot of hard work has gone in over many months to decorate and equip the new rooms.

Our new Primary Team has welcomed our new pupils and they are off to a great start.

The London Challenge – KS3

On Thursday 11 May 2017, students participated in a visit to famous sightseeing attractions: the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, London Dungeon, London Zoo, Trafalgar Square, Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus, to name but a few.

The aim of the day was to visit the selected landmarks, take photos of them and return back to school with the first back receiving a prize.

The students were organised into groups with two teachers. Equipped with their lunch and a day travel card , they had to plan the route, deciding whether to travel by train, bus or walk.

The sense of competition affected the teachers as well who could not help but get involved in the planning!!!!

It was a beautiful day and all enjoyed the experience. For some students this was their first experience of being in central London and they revelled in the sights

KS3 Mastermind!!

We hosted an exciting event on Friday 19 May 2017 when the Mohammed brothers who run motivational sessions with our students, organised a quiz morning. It was a dynamic, thrilling and nail biting!!!
The Mohammed brothers visit weekly and run sessions which address our school values: respect, responsibility, courage, belief, integrity, excellence and vision. Students thoroughly enjoy these sessions.
Students were put into teams and the competition was fierce; there were no second chances!!! Questions covered topics covered in the different subjects studied. Teachers submitted questions and students worked hard to recall information and worked positively with one another to gain points. Working collaboratively has been a focus area for development this year and it was therefore great to see students listening to each other in their teams.

Students were also tested on topics covered in their sessions with the Mohammed brothers this academic year: the 13 steps to success, finding the leader within, looking at the programme developed by the US Marine Corps which is used to train their own leaders and famous high achievers: Wilma Rudolph who overcame overwhelming odds to pursue her goals, Cory, a young boy who started his own business and Ben Carson, branded a failure at school, a target of bullying, became a leading surgeon in his field of expertise.
Great fun was had by all and we look forward to the next Mastermind Quiz.

Year 10 Trip to Parliament

Great trip with our Year 10 to Parliament. They had fun on the tour around the buildings. They were learning about our Democratic systems. They took part in workshops to make their own laws and learn about rules of debating. In the final debate they had to wear their team’s bowler hats to present their arguments.

Theatre Trip – So U Think I am Crazy?

KS4 went to see a play about Mental Health and it’s impact on people’s daily lives. We were so impressed by Judy’s acting. Judy is our Drama Therapist. We managed to capture just a small part of the performance.

So U Think I’m Crazy is a production by Know My Mind, a community therapeutic and educational theatre group.

It is a hard hitting, emotive play which incorporates poetry, dance and music, and tells the story of a young African/Caribbean man as he journeys through the psychiatric hospital.

MacMillan Coffee Morning

We held our third MacMillan Cake Morning at both KS3 and KS4.  We raised £60.45 altogether.  We had fantastic displays demonstrating our student’s excellent cake decorating skills.  I can guess why this event is so popular.
